Andrew Rieder
John Andrew Rieder (1836-1911) emigrated from Baudenbach, Bavaria, Germany in 1858, but only remained only a couple years in North Carolina before returning back to Germany. After a stay of one year he returned to the United States in the summer of 1861.
On 21 November, 1861, Andrew volunteered for military service with the Union Army at Camp Diamond, Middleport, Ohio, in Company “H”, 53rd regiment, Ohio infantry.
He survived the Battle of Shiloh, the Siege of Vicksburg, (1863); was wounded at Chickamauga. When General William Tecumseh Sherman's "Army of the West" captured Atlanta on September 2, 1864, Andrew was among those who made the "March from Atlanta to the Sea:. They reached Savannah, Georgia on 20 Dec., 1864. He was mustered out at war's end and honorably discharged on 15 Feb., 1865at Columbus, Ohio and was also granted citizenship in the United States.
He was united in marriage in 1865 to Rachel Jane Cline in Middleport, Ohio They moved to Iowa where their two children were born, (Florence Alfreda and Leonard). They moved to Minneapolis, MN about 1876. Rachel died 16 Nov., 1877.
He later relocated Delano, MN. He married Albertina Fredericka Knop on 28 Apr. 1879. He continued his trade as a wagonmaker. He also drove a stagecoach between Delano and Rockford, MN. Andrew built the barn that is still standing, property of Andrews great nephews, Daniel and David Rieder.
