Iten Funeral Services

Iten Funeral Services began in the late 1890’s in Browerville, Minnesota.  Joseph and Amelia (Heid) Iten opened a harness shop on the main street of Browerville.  From this beginning they added furniture, hardware, propane gas, livery, ambulance and funeral service.
Joseph died in 1920 and his 19 year old son, Edmund took over the management of the Iten and Heid Hardware and Funeral Home.  In the beginning of the funeral home, the family employed an embalmer named Mr. Sarf.  After World War I, embalming became more the norm and Edmund’s brother Roman became a licensed embalmer.
On Dec. 11, 1930, Edmund married Fay Dan and to this union 6 children were born.  James A. Iten was one of their children.  James decided to follow into the family business and attended the University of Minnesota where he received a degree in Mortuary science.
In 1960, Anthony “Tony” Boyce, the owner of what was the Tougess Funeral Home suffered a debilitating heart attack.  Gladys Boyce reached out to the University program looking for a funeral director.  James, “Jim” accepted the position with the Boyce’s while he was still a student at the U of M.
In 1962, James and Charlotte Iten purchased the funeral home from the Boyce’s.  Jim and Char made Delano their home; and together they had one son, Timothy J. Iten.  Tim followed his father’s lead and attended the University of Minnesota completing his degree in mortuary science in 1990.  Tim and Cindy Iten took over management of the Iten Funeral Home in the year 2000.  Tim and Cindy Iten were united in marriage in 1996 and together they raised 5 sons.  Zachary J. Iten, one of Tim and Cindy’s sons is currently in the mortuary program at the University of Minnesota with the goal of completing his degree in mortuary science in 2022.  He will become the 5th generation of Iten’s in the funeral service.
