WW I Memorial
There is a Memorial Rock in the city park, with a plaque commemorating Miss Jane Delano, a Red Cross nurse, and five Delano young men, all of whom lost their lives in World War I. The rock is in the Memorial Grove, six trees planted in the shape of a cross in their honor.
In Memorial Day services on May 30th, 1939, following a parade and a program in the high school auditorium, a dedication service was held at the park. Mr. N.C. Stark presented the rock in memory of his father, William E. Stark, a Civil War veteran and member of the First Minnesota Heavy Artillery. Frank Brunkow dedicated the Memorial Plaque, eulogizing each of the names on it.
The trees were purchased and set in May 1919 by the village council. The center tree, a Scotch pine, was dedicated to Miss Jane Delano. The other five trees are Norway pines, and dedicated to Walter H. Buckley, Mike Krajewski, Casimir Warras, Otto Mellows, and Leonard Schaust. The American Legion secured the huge rock and the plaque for the Memorial Grove in 1938 to provide a permanent marker.
